PCIT is a brief model of therapy that works with the parent and the child together. It is designed to work with children between the ages of 2 to 8 who have behavior problems. PCIT is appropriate for a number of presenting problems, such as:

  • non-compliance
  • aggression
  • hyperactivity
  • developmental delays
  • sad mood
  • bonding in blended families
  • post-divorce adjustment
  • separation anxiety
  • and abuse situations

This treatment emphasizes changing negative parent-child interaction patterns. PCIT has been empirically evaluated in over 30 controlled studies. Treatment gains generalized to untreated siblings, the home, and the school. The therapist functions in the role of a coach and is active and directive during the session.
